By a Wedding Photographer Who’s Slightly Obsessed With Golden Light and Rolling Hills
If you’ve ever driven through Kamloops, you’ve probably caught yourself saying, “Wait… is this a desert?” And yes, it is—sort of!
Kamloops is where BC's wild and rugged beauty meets golden grasslands, river valleys, and dramatic hoodoo rock formations that look like they were plucked straight out of a dusty western (minus the tumbleweeds… most of the time). It's the kind of place where you can have mountain views, sun-drenched fields, and wildflower meadows—all within 30 minutes of each other. Coming from a wedding photographer, Kamloops is criminally underrated when it comes to stunning wedding and elopement backdrops.
Whether you're planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you and your vows (plus a photographer third-wheeling with happy tears, duh), or a full celebration with guests clinking champagne glasses under a cotton-candy sunset, Kamloops brings the vibe. It’s perfect for adventurous couples who want something different—something a little wild, a little magical, and totally “you.”
So if you're wondering where to take those epic, frame-worthy photos in Kamloops and beyond, here are some of my absolute favourite spots and a few insider tips that I’ve learned the dusty-boot way:
LAC DU BOIS GRASSLANDS
For couples who want: Sweeping, cinematic landscapes.
This is my go-to for that earthy, wind-in-your-hair kind of photo session. The grasslands are vast, open, and filled with character—sagebrush, rolling hills, and if you time it right, those golden-hour sunsets that make your skin glow and your photos sing. Pro tip: bring bug spray and a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting dusty.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Cool tones! Blues, whites, greens. Keep it soft, neutral, and bright to compliment the rolling hills and blue skies.
DOWNTOWN KAMLOOPS
For couples who want: Historic architecture and a touch of urban flair.
Downtown Kamloops has some seriously underrated photo ops if you know where to look. The Old Courthouse is a personal favourite—with its ivy-covered stone walls, big old windows, and classic architectural details, it gives your photos a timeless, European vibe without ever leaving BC. Just around the corner, City Hall offers clean lines, a sleek modern contrast, and some beautifully maintained greenery out front. Pair that with the alley murals, brick buildings, and vintage lamp posts scattered around the downtown core, and you’ve got a whole variety of backdrops within walking distance. Bonus: there's usually a coffee shop nearby if we need a caffeine top-up or a mid-shoot croissant. Priorities, right?
KAMLOOPS LAKE - SIX MILE HILL
For couples who want: Dramatic cliffs, sparkling water, and a hint of West Coast energy.
Out near Tobiano and Savona, the views over Kamloops Lake are spectacular *chef’s kiss.* There are rugged cliffs, wide-open skies, and moments where you feel like you’re standing at the edge of the world. It’s one of those “you have to be there” kind of places—and the wind loves to show off and aid in dramatics.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Cool tones! Blues, whites, greens. Keep it soft, neutral, and bright to compliment the blue tones in the lake and sky.
WHITECROFT FALLS
For couples who want: A hidden gem waterfall and a touch of wild romance.
Tucked away just outside of Kamloops near Sun Peaks, Whitecroft Falls is the kind of place that feels like a secret—like you stumbled upon it while chasing forest fairies or getting lost on purpose. The trail in is short and sweet, and once you get there, you're greeted by a dreamy little waterfall surrounded by lush forest and mossy rocks. It’s especially gorgeous in spring and early summer when the falls are full and the greens are rich. Pro tip: wear proper shoes—there’s a bit of rocky terrain, and stilettos plus nature don’t always get along.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Cool tones! Blues, whites, greens. Keep it soft, neutral, and bright to compliment the deep greenery and waterfall.
PETERSON CREEK
For couples who want: A nature escape right in the middle of the city.
Peterson Creek is one of those magical places where you can be five minutes from downtown and still feel like you’ve wandered deep into nature. The trails wind through rugged canyon walls, wildflowers in the spring, and—if you’re up for a short hike—a beautiful little waterfall that makes the perfect backdrop for some romantic, tucked-away photos. It’s ideal for couples who want a mix of adventurous and accessible. Plus, there are multiple entry points and trail options, so we can tailor the experience to your vibe.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Warm tones! Reds, yellows, oranges, more jewel tone colours, and as always neutrals! This is especially important with Fall foliage to avoid the cool tones.
HOODOO VALLEY
For couples who want: Otherworldly landscapes and dramatic desert vibes.
Just east of Kamloops along East Shuswap Road lies a stretch of terrain that feels like stepping onto another planet. The Hoodoo Valley boasts towering silt bluffs and hoodoos—ancient formations sculpted over millennia from the remnants of a glacial lake bed. These natural pillars rise amidst golden grasslands and sagebrush, offering a surreal and cinematic backdrop for wedding photos. The best part? You don't need to hike for miles; there are convenient pull-offs where we can capture the magic without breaking a sweat (or a heel). Just remember to respect the land, as much of it is on private property or Indigenous territory. And if you're up for it, a post-shoot visit to nearby wineries like Sagewood or Monte Creek can add a delightful finish to your day.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Flexible with cool and warm tones, but stick to one or the other!
TRANQUILLE CREEK
For couples who want: A blend of desert charm and serene landscapes.
Nestled just outside Kamloops, Tranquille Creek Park offers a unique setting where arid grasslands meet gentle creekside trails. The area is characterized by its rolling hills, sagebrush, and the meandering Tranquille Creek, providing a tranquil backdrop for engagement photos. The park's natural beauty is especially captivating during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the landscape. It's a spot that combines accessibility with the feeling of being off the beaten path, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful yet picturesque location. Just remember to tread lightly and respect the natural environment to preserve its beauty for others.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Warm tones and neutrals! Especially during the Fall!
SUN PEAKS
For couples who want: Alpine elegance with a side of adventure, and SNOW!
Just a 45-minute drive from Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort offers a picturesque mountain village setting that's perfect for weddings and engagements. With its charming European-inspired architecture, scenic alpine vistas, and year-round activities, it's a dream location for couples seeking a blend of natural beauty and modern amenities. Whether you're envisioning a summer ceremony amidst wildflowers or a winter wonderland wedding with snow-covered peaks, Sun Peaks delivers. Venues like the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel provide both indoor and outdoor options, ensuring your special day is as seamless as it is stunning.
Outfit recommendation based on area: Cool tones! Blues, whites, greens. Keep it soft, neutral, and bright to compliment the cool tones of the snow, greenery, and sky lines.
Kamloops is like that effortlessly cool friend who doesn’t show off but secretly knows all the best spots. It offers this incredible mix of natural beauty, relaxed vibes, and easy access—without the chaos (or pricing) of bigger wedding destinations. And for photographers like me? It’s a dream. The light here is warm and soft, the landscapes are wildly versatile, and every season brings its own magic.
So if you're considering eloping or getting married somewhere beautiful, down-to-earth, and just a little off the beaten path—Kamloops is calling! And I might just be there with my camera in one hand and a coffee in the other.
